Lock number 1 over the Kennet and Avon Canal is Hanham Lock, 1st opened as Component of the Avon Navigation in 1727. It is the 1st lock east of Netham, the upstream Restrict on the Floating Harbour, past the suburbs of the town of Bristol. A colliery wharf was sited just west of the lock, even so the nearby coal mines shut during the 19th century.[
